The review math

Why 150 reviews from 2022 can lose to 30 from this spring

Picture two Littleton HVAC companies. One has 150 reviews, but the newest is eight months old. The other has 30, with four from the last few weeks mentioning furnace repairs in Columbine. If three quarters of readers only care about the last three months, the second company looks more alive, more relevant and more trustworthy.

Google seems to agree. Recency, steady volume and what reviewers actually write about all feed local rankings. A review that says "fixed our furnace the same day in Ken Caryl" helps you for both the service and the place in a way a generic "great job" never can.

That is why we build a habit, not a campaign. A burst of reviews followed by silence looks odd to readers and to Google. A few every week looks like a busy, healthy business, which is exactly what it is. Reviews are also a core part of how Littleton map rankings work.

The 4.5-star line

Nearly a third of consumers now filter out anything below 4.5 stars. That does not mean you need a perfect score. A 4.7 with a few honest critical reviews and good replies often reads as more believable than a spotless 5.0.

The rules we will not bend

Ethical reviews only. It is safer and it works better.

Shortcuts get reviews deleted, profiles penalized and, under the FTC's rule on fake reviews, can bring real legal risk. Here is where we draw the line.

We do

  • Ask every customer, happy or not, the same simple way
  • Send the request soon after the job, while it is fresh
  • Make it one tap with a direct review link or QR code
  • Train your team to ask in person at the right moment
  • Reply to reviews within a few days

We never

  • Gate reviews by filtering unhappy customers to a private form
  • Offer discounts, gift cards or drawings for reviews
  • Write, buy or swap reviews
  • Have staff or family review the business
  • Pressure customers to change a review

Why so strict? Partly because the rules are clear. Google prohibits gating and incentives and removes reviews it believes were bought or filtered. The FTC's rule on fake reviews, finalized in 2024, bans fake and purchased reviews and the suppression of negative ones. But mostly because shortcuts do not hold up. A wave of suspicious reviews can disappear in a filter sweep, taking your rating with it.

The honest approach is also the more useful one. When you ask everyone, the occasional unhappy customer tells you about a problem you can fix, often before it turns into a public complaint. That feedback is worth more than a slightly higher average. Our founder, Zach Wennstedt, managed sales for multi-million-dollar plumbing companies and national remodeling teams before building this agency, and he treats asking every customer, every time, as a daily habit rather than a campaign.

Timing is everything

When and how to ask, by type of business

Healthcare practices need extra care. Replies must never confirm someone is a patient or discuss their care. We cover that in more depth on our dental and medical SEO page. Contractors have their own rhythm, with crews in the field and jobs that run for days, which we tackle on the home services SEO page.

When it stings

How to reply to a negative review without making it worse

A one-star review feels personal, especially for an owner who built the business by hand. But your reply is not really for the reviewer. It is for the next 50 people deciding whether to call you. They want to see a calm, fair business that fixes problems.

  1. Wait an hour. Never reply angry. Read it twice and check your records.
  2. Thank and acknowledge. Name the concern in plain words, without admitting things that are not true.
  3. Keep details private. No customer names, invoices or arguments in public.
  4. Offer a next step. A direct line to the owner or manager, then follow through.
  5. Flag only real violations. Spam, wrong business or conflicts of interest can be reported. Disagreement cannot.

Sample reply

"Thank you for telling us. A two-day wait for a no-heat call is not the standard we hold ourselves to, and I am sorry. I would like to make this right. Please call me directly at the office and ask for the owner."

Short, human, accountable, and it moves the conversation offline. Readers notice that more than the original complaint.

What review management with us includes

We set up simple request links and QR codes, connect them to your scheduling or invoicing where possible, and coach your team on the ask. We monitor new reviews across the sites that matter for you, draft replies in your voice for approval and flag anything that breaks platform rules.

Reviews also shape AI answers. Assistants lean on what reviewers say to explain why they recommend a business, so detailed recent reviews feed directly into our AI search optimization for Littleton. And replies live on your profile, so they tie into Google Business Profile management too.

We cannot promise a rating or a number of reviews, because your customers write them. We can promise a steady, honest system that makes asking easy and replying thoughtful. If your reviews have gone quiet, let's talk about a plan.

FAQ

Reviews, answered

Is it legal to offer a discount for leaving a review?

Google's policies forbid offering incentives for reviews, and the FTC's rule on fake reviews prohibits incentives tied to a positive or negative review. Even a neutral discount for any review breaks Google's rules and can get reviews removed. Ask well and often instead; it works.

Can I get a bad Google review removed?

Only if it breaks Google's policies, such as spam, a conflict of interest, offensive content or a review about a different business. You can flag it from your profile and appeal if the first decision goes against you. A review you simply disagree with stays, so a calm public reply is your best tool.

Should I reply to every review, even the five-star ones?

Yes, when you can. A short, specific thank-you shows readers you pay attention, and it is a natural place to mention the service and neighborhood. Keep replies varied and human rather than pasting the same line every time.

What is review gating and why is it a problem?

Review gating means asking customers how they feel first and only sending happy ones to Google while routing unhappy ones to a private form. Google prohibits it, and it misleads future customers. Ask everyone the same way and handle problems directly.

How many reviews does a Littleton business need?

BrightLocal found 47% of consumers will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, so that is a sensible first goal. After that, freshness matters more than the total. A steady handful each month beats a burst of fifty followed by silence.

Do Yelp and Apple Maps reviews matter if Google is the big one?

Yes. BrightLocal found Apple Maps review usage nearly doubled to 27% while Google's share fell to 71%, and consumers check about six review sites on average. You do not need to chase every site, but the two or three your customers use should look healthy.
